I took the next couple of days off to get my house squared away. With help from my neighbor during the day and help from Ethan and Milly in the evenings, it was safe to say my home was now as secure as Fort Knox. Upon Milly’s request, however, Barkley and I would stay at her house for another week, just to let the dust settle.

On the last night of installing cameras, I was feeling sad that circumstances called for such drastic measures, but Ethan had kindly cheered me up by bringing us treats from Vivi’s café. Over the last couple of weeks, Ethan had proved himself to be one of the most thoughtful men I’d ever known. His ex-wife must have been a fool to take him for granted, unless there was a side of him I hadn’t seen yet. Somehow, I highly doubted this was the case.

Ethan was on my mind more and more lately, which I found disturbing. Last night when I was trying to fall asleep, I resolved to keep some boundaries in our relationship by keeping most of our interactions professional. He made a great assistant sleuth and veterinarian, but beyond those two things, I’d keep our friendship in check. Besides, Ethan never gave signs of wanting anything beyond that, anyway. Ethan’s thoughtful gestures were not exclusively toward me. He also showed the same thoughtfulness toward everyone else. Didn’t he?

After dinner, Milly and I went to explore the oldest graveyard in Sparrow Haven in search of Monroe’s grave. It was the same graveyard Milly and I used to come to at night as kids to tell each other ghost stories. The idea was to scare each other half to death until neither of us could sleep. Instead, we’d stay up solving fictional mysteries until dawn.

We turned on to the dirt road leading to the front of the historic cemetery.

“Hey, did Fred say whether he found any leads on the gunman?” Milly asked, petting Barkley’s head between our seats.

“No, but he’s working on it. Fred has a hunch the gunman is from out of town.”

Milly sniffed. “I keep wondering if you should stay with me until they catch the culprit.”

I rolled my eyes. “And I’m thinking you want me and Barkley to move in with you permanently. It’s probably safer at my house now that I have a security system. Now, can we focus on the task at hand, silly woman? We have a lot of support in this case. Something is bound to come to fruition any day now.”

“Okay, fine. You know I’m a worry wart.”

“Yes, I do,” I said, chuckling. “Is your arm healing okay? Does it hurt still?” I asked, glancing at the bandage.

“The Neosporin is working wonders. It’s tender to the touch, but it’s not too bad otherwise. I can’t believe I can say a bullet grazed me. Kind of cool,” she added with a smirk.

I shook my head. “Sometimes I wonder about you,” I said, pulling into the graveled lot.

Barkley yapped with excitement when I opened the back door to let him run loose.
